I really appreciate coming across this. It has made my editing experience so much fun! Programmable keypads don’t come close.
A tip if you find your midi controller misbehaving and you’re as MIDI illiterate as I am – clear/delete the unit’s memory (I used MIDI Control Center for the Beatstep) and re-sync with the file you get from the tutorial. Configuring the giant know to LEFT and RIGHT was helpful for me too.
Thanks William, I had been searching too long for this. Check your paypal!
You’re welcome and thank you for the tip, I tried it right away (I was experiencing some delay/dropped commands) and it seemed to clear things up indeed.
Thanks for the donation also, that is very much appreciated! :-)
I just wanted to express my thanks. I bought a used Beatstep just for this. Unfortunately I only got it to work once. But that one time was SUPERB! I’m on a Windows 10. I can see the Beatstep inputs being registered via BOME but nothing’s happening. Configured the large knob (17) to input “a” and Microsoft Word didn’t register it. Sigh… I was so excited! Good thing I’m using the trial version of BOME. Tried restarting the PC but still the same. Tried unplugging, starting CO and BOME in different sequences, etc. If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate the sharing.
Thank you for you comment! I’m glad you got it working but it’s strange it somehow stopped, it’s hard to say what it might be.
I’m thinking about getting some more interaction between users but have not yet decided what platform to use, I’ll keep you informed!
Hi there!
I just finished my first setup for the Arturio Beatstep and Capture One Pro 20 on the Mac.
You can download the configuration files for the Beatstep, the BOME Midi Translator project and the keyboard settings here if you’re interested.
(the .plist file is the Capture One Keyboard Shortcut config)
best,
geb
Thanks a lot for the zip, I’ve added it to the list of archives.
I have no Mac so I couldn’t test/check the files, though I hope they will get others started.
Just a quick note to thank you for your efforts, and providing the .zip file, it’s a great starting point and had me up and running within minutes of receiving a Beatstep today.
Nice Greyhound shots too – we have one as a pet :-)
Hi Bryan,
I don’t think it will work because Capture One isn’t sending back the values to the controller.
(if someone has experienced otherwise, please let us know)
Also, keep in mind that “relative rotaries” will probably be more useful compared to “limited faders”.
Do you think there is a software programming issue or should be a malfunctioning of my Arturia device since my rotary knobs, sometimes when rotated to right let’s say, do the left command? I see in logs 65,65,65 and sometimes 63. I’m heavy using it for more than half a year, and I need to check if it’s a malfunction to send it in for warranty.
Hi Alin,
I’ve noticed the same behavior and got a second (used) one, this one felt like it responded more reliable than my first.
That means: less latency and errors.
I must add, I’ve disassembled the first one a few times that’s why I thought it was “user related”.
I’ll see how the coming weeks come along…
Hi. I am using the ARTURIA Beatstep with BOME for a couple of months now and the big know ( 17 by default ) is hard to control from the beginning – it gets wrong direction commands all the time like 65 / 63 output is heavily misplaced with even a gentle movements. Other ( smaller ) knobs seems to be all right – no wrong movements according to the log. I though that there is some program implementation bug for thr big ( 17 ) know but now I realize that I probably got a broken know on my device and should replace it. What do you think guys ? Do you have a knob direction problems with all the knobs or just some of them ?
There are more / similar experiences as I’ve heard. My first BS (used) had some unpredictable behavior also. I replaced it with a new one and things got a lot better, no more random values when turning the rotaries.
You might want to give it a try with another controller? I’m confident about the Arturia hardware though… I think mine had suffered a bit from disassembly by myself ?
Well from my understanding there is some software code glitch causing it. I have tried to change a channels back and forth within the Arturia Midi Control Center for the big (17) knob and saving and storing into the memory. That surprisingly have sorted the things for the big know like for 95% according to the BOME translator log.
Following your indications I sold my X-Touch and bought the Arturia.
It works. I can’t believe it!
Man, you make me happy. You deserve more than two beers.
Great Work Phodograf – seriously considering buying into a controller and software.
Can somebody please clearify something for me?
+ Do the controls stay in same position when you jump to the next picture – I mean will the settings be copied to the next picture or how does it work?
You’re welcome :-)
In case of the Arturia (and similar controllers) The rotary knobs are infinite, there’s no ‘communication’ between C1 and the MIDI controller.
This means the values of the parameters are stored in C1’s database / XMP.
When you switch photo the settings are loaded and you can change the values from here.
Thanks for all the resources you share. Absolutely fantastic. I just got my Beatstep connected and customized your different files for my workflow and trying to figure out what would be the best layout. A lot of experimentation ahead.
A question I can’t seem to find an answer for: Have you figured out how to use the Beatstep to control the tools on individual adjustment layers? It seems that even if you make a mask and are active in the adjustment layer any tweak of variables will be applied to the background.
Great to hear your enthusiasm!
Unfortunately at this moment that seems like a CO limitation.
You should be able to control the settings (or some of them) of a layer when you have it selected though.
I just wanted to say a big thank you for all the inspiration and information on this page. I was up and running with my newly delivered Beatstep and C1 Pro in less than 5 minutes and a day later I have Bome’s MIDI Translator Pro re-configured for my particular workflow in C1 Pro.
I hope that Phase One will in the future provide updated shortcuts (or reaction to mouse hover and scroll) that match the click and drag responses, for example with Exposure:
– Using a mouse the values move in steps of +/- 0.03 or 0.04
– Using mouse hover and scroll wheel or mouse click and keyboard arrow keys the values move in steps of +/- 0.1
– Using the shortcuts the values move in steps of +/- 0.1
Other functions that suffer this sort of discrepancy are White balance (both Kelvin & Tint), HDR recovery (both Highlight and Shadow), Brightness, Saturation and Rotation. Its not a show stopper by any means but it would be nice if the reaction using the various methods of C1 Pro control were consistent.
Now I really have to see if I can actually process images significantly faster that I can with the mouse only. Independently of those findings it is really quite comfortable to make fine adjustments using the knobs of the Beatstep rather than holding a mouse button down and making small controlled movements for hours on end during an editing session.
Once again thanks for all your work and for being so generous with your experiences.
You’re welcome and great to hear you got it setup easily.
I’m quite convinced you’ll adapt the use of the controller and efficiency it brings :-)
Have a nice day!
Thx for the reply. You have mentioned the BCR2000 by Behringer as a possible midi controller to operate in conjunction with BOME.
Though it is more expensive but with more knobs looks more advanced than the Beatstep. I have found the BCF2000 by Behringer with 8 motorized sliders.
With your experience do you think is is possible to program BOME to operate the BCF2000 motorized sliders to get the feedback from the C1.
For example, while changing the active photo in C1 to get the sliders on the BCF2000 in the correct position according to the following sliders in the C1 Exposure, Contrast, HDR etc ?
I know what you mean, it seems to be working with Lightroom and Midi2LR.
I have no experience with the combination of C1 + BCF2000 but I have some doubt if C1 is returning the required information.
Though it should be working with Tangent? (… to be continued) :-)
(… to be continued) – good one
According to the BOME’s QA board, there is no way to implement the MIDI feedback from C1 without the SDK. As you have mentioned Tangent team have implemented this with their LCD screens. Capture One SDK is very expensive AFAIK, therefore those are the limitations we have do deal with currently.
What would you suggest according to your experience – the new Arturia Beatstep or the used Behringer BCR2000 with the extra knobs. Are there any limitations you have experienced in the workflow that may be resolved with extra knobs. The price difference is not big – I may find the BCR2000 in good condition for about 200$ US in my area, while the new Beatstep will cost me $140 US. Desktop place is not a problem, though the Beatstep looks more eligant as for my taste.
Thx
True… We’ll just have to be creative with what we have I guess.
I’d prefer the rotary controls and the build quality of the Arturia (these can also be found used and in black or white)
Desktop place? I’ve made something nice for that too:
Heya! I’ve ordered my beatstep finally, and I’m soooo excited for it to arrive!
My question right now is more about your desk overlay. Could you please advise what material you used and how you built it?
My tablet has been irritating me for far too long and I dream of a workstation as neat as yours, I just thought I’d ask for some pointers before I go out and buy a bunch of foam core I don’t need, etc.
Thanks a million!
Great to hear your enthusiasm! :-)
I’d advise you to first find out where you prefer to place the hardware and start with one that you know is going to be ‘temporary’.
The first try will likely to have some improvements, so don’t waste too much time in painting it.
I used 15 mm MDF, cut out the shapes and made the hole for the Wacom tablet just big enough for the necessary part, as small as possible.
Also I tried to have the part covering the tablet as thin as possible so it doesn’t get in the way.
The USB cables are guided through channels and I finished the bottom with a layer of 6 mm MDF.
Finally I’ve put rubber feet underneath to keep it from sliding.
I’ve added some more photos in the gallery on this page, just below ‘Customizing’. HERE
Good luck and let your creativity “guide” you! :-)
Thank you for letting us know of your work. I am considering getting the midi controller for C1 workflow.
Would you please tell, is it possible to push the arturia encoders in order to program them to reset a certain changes that have been done.
For example, after you turn the exposure encoder and you want to reset the exposure changes.
You’re welcome :-)
The Arturia Beatstep doesn’t support reset by pushing the rotaries.
As far as I know it’s also not possible to send a “set exposure to 0” command with the use of a keyboard shortcut.
Thanks for this. Really appreciate it. I bought the Arturia BeatStep & Bome Midi Translator because of this.
Can you make the instructions a bit clearer please, would help the people new to the game?
… “list of pointers” …
Don’t get me wrong. I’m really grateful to have such a great deal of work already done in order to make it ready to use.
I’m just trying to make things easier with a few updates for the next person who comes along, since this had me stumped for a while when I started. :-)
Hi JP,
Thanks a lot for your pointers (I shortened your comment a bit ;-) )!
My apologies for any frustration along the way, and am glad you got it figured out :-)
Have a nice day!
Hi Ryszard,
That looks great, I’ve donwloaded, installed and gave it a quick look (do you have an English version too maybe)?
I’ll spend some more time with it, it seems less complicated than BOME’s, and if it does the job, why not . . .
There is only the Polish version. After configuring, the language does not matter because the messages displayed are scarce.
Everything that is displayed can be translated in the Midi2Macro.m2k file itself (you have to do it with the program turned off because when you close it, the program overwrites this file with what it has in memory) and will be in any language.
I’ll have a better look later this week.
You must have put in a lot of work, and it looks really great/promising. I only mentioned the English language out of ‘uniformity’ on my system.
We’ll talk later! :-)
Well, nothing will ever be perfect I guess. It’s always an option to send a feature request to Phase One, who knows.
Fortunatly a lot of other things are working (such as translation of the UI) ;-)
I’ve taken some more time to find out how to program this and gave up.
It’s totally unclear to me how modify/edit controllers and what everything means and I have more to do besides learning Polish.
I hope you’ll find the motivation to translate to English at least, I’m sure it will have much more potentional than it has already!
I’ve programmed two controllers, Exposure and contrast.
Compared to BOME it feels slow, the change of paremeters has quite some lag. BOME is much more responsive.
Is there some way to improve this?
Hi Lars,
You’re welcome, great to hear you’re almost there.
Did you try to assign the ascii code [ alt + 239 ] to a controller
This should work, and demonstrates the potentional of this ‘system’ :-)
If you meant [ ctrl + shift + ‘ ] then you could try to change the sequence of the characters to [ ‘ + ctrl + shift ] because BOME doesn’t seem to accept the ‘ as last.
Thank you so much for sharing! It was exactly what I was looking for.
I use the setup on a mac and after some smart starting-problems now everything works great.
Just one question for my understanding: do I have to start the arturia midi control center really every time to make the board work?
After I connected the board and startet the software I can close the software and it works fine – else it won’t.
You’re welcome!
Great to hear you got it working.
This might have to do with how USB is initialized?
I’m working on Windows so I cannot say for sure if it is required to start/stop MCC.
Fwiw: I only have to keep BOME loaded in the background, which is obvious ;-)
Hello,
Thank you so much for sharing this info! I have Behringer X-touch Mini and Bomes midi translator 1.7, and Im trying to make my knobs work.
I can only make it work with switches but not the knobs (for exposure etc.) Could you please point me in the right direction how to set it up!
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thank you,
Zoran
You’re welcome!
I’d first advice you to check if the controller has relative rotary controls.
Fixed value rotarys and sliders will not work as nice as you’d expect.
Looks great. Thank you sharing this information. Would you mind explaining how to create the overlay for the Arturia Beatstep and sharing your template?
Hi,
I am in the process to move from LR to COP.
This MIDI console very handy to speed up the development process.
Some questions before I do a possible purchase.
1. Is it possible to give the dails and buttons multiple functions ( by pushing an additional button) ?
2. Why do you need the additional Bome Midi Translator software ?
1 – You should be able to combine keyboard and controller input. For instance [shift] + [rotary]
2 – The MIDI controller sends out MIDI values, these are being translated to simulate keyboard input
That would have no effect since the [Shift] button of the midi-controller is not programmable with MidiControlCenter.
What might be an option to get what you want is to program one of the pads to be translated as a [keyboard shift].
Hi,
That seems awesome, but i just can’t figure out how to combine the keyboard input (eg ctrl) wit the controller input on my mac.
For example, i use the big knob (CC17) voor zoom in and out (cmd + and cmd- shortcuts in CO). But i would like to use a keyboard modifier to also use the knob for eg rotation. So in CO shortcut i added ctrl cmd + and ctrl cmd – for rotating +0,1 and -0,1.
Pressing the ctrl button on the keyboard and turning the big knob should now start rotating the image. But it doesn’t.
Then i tried mapping the ctrl button to cc115 pad, but this doesn’t work either.
Any advise on how to do this? Did i followed the right procedure?
I’ve just tried (on Windows) and I was able to combine the [alt] of my keyboard with a rotary.
Turning the rotary CW = Exposure +
Turning the rotary CW + [alt] = Exposure –
You seem to following the right procedure, maybe try another key, like [shift] to rule out the [ctrl] not working?
Good luck!
edit, Willem found a very helpful how-to video made by BOME, this one opens another door towards more control!
Hi Willem,
You’re welcome :-)
If you’re using Windows you should be able to see the keyboard shortcuts after placing them in: C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\CaptureOne\CustomCommands
Good luck!
After a few hours I have all the rotaries programmed and working as I want them but can’t find a way to get the pads working.
I thought the answer was to send to channel 2, but no go. Also tried a value of 0 and 1 (on/off).
Just having the slider controls on dial is a great help and I’m no slouch with bashing a keyboard for moving these round. If I can get tools, panels and view options on pads it would be the icing on the cake.
Hi Terry,
You’re welcome, I’m glad it got you started at least.
If you know a keyboard shortcut for the command you should be able to assign a pad to it.
Have a nice day!
Really nice!!
You’re welcome :-)
I really appreciate coming across this. It has made my editing experience so much fun! Programmable keypads don’t come close.
A tip if you find your midi controller misbehaving and you’re as MIDI illiterate as I am – clear/delete the unit’s memory (I used MIDI Control Center for the Beatstep) and re-sync with the file you get from the tutorial. Configuring the giant know to LEFT and RIGHT was helpful for me too.
Thanks William, I had been searching too long for this. Check your paypal!

Does anyone know how to configure BCF2000’s motorized faders via Midi Translator Pro for C1(Brightness, Exposure,….etc)?
Thanks so much!!

Hi JP,
Thanks a lot for your pointers (I shortened your comment a bit ;-) )!
My apologies for any frustration along the way, and am glad you got it figured out :-)
Have a nice day!
Since I was not satisfied with BOME as a MIDI console driver, I wrote a program that supports Arturia console for Capture One:
https://fotorys.wordpress.com/2018/01/11/midi2macro/
More information here:
https://fotorys.wordpress.com/midi2macro/

I hope you’ll find the motivation to translate to English at least, I’m sure it will have much more potentional than it has already!
I’ve programmed two controllers, Exposure and contrast.
Compared to BOME it feels slow, the change of paremeters has quite some lag. BOME is much more responsive.
Is there some way to improve this?
Try to change in the file Midi2Macro.ini:
TransmisjaInfo=N

Hi,
Thank you for sharing your work. It took me a while to figure out how to set up the system, but now I´m nearly done.
My only Question is how to make an ACCENT AIGU in Bome MIDI Translator. The sequence should be: Shift(Ctrl(ACCENT AIGU))
I can´t figure out how to du it
Best regards
Lars
Hi Lars,
You’re welcome, great to hear you’re almost there.
Good luck!
Best, Michael
Fixed value rotarys and sliders will not work as nice as you’d expect.
well, the Behringer hast relative encoders, thats why so many people love it for using in lightroom :-)
Thanks for bringing that up, it’s a nice compact device and seems like a great alternative!
Looks great. Thank you sharing this information. Would you mind explaining how to create the overlay for the Arturia Beatstep and sharing your template?
You’re welcome!
The pdf is already available in the archive: Beatstep 4 Capture One 2.x (Lay-out).pdf
You da man! All this legwork, you deserve a beer or two. Thank you so much, it works :)
Thank you too!
I’m glad I could help you to get started, I know how happy I was when I got it working :-)
Hi,
I am in the process to move from LR to COP.
This MIDI console very handy to speed up the development process.
Some questions before I do a possible purchase.
1. Is it possible to give the dails and buttons multiple functions ( by pushing an additional button) ?
2. Why do you need the additional Bome Midi Translator software ?
Cheers
1 – You should be able to combine keyboard and controller input. For instance [shift] + [rotary]
2 – The MIDI controller sends out MIDI values, these are being translated to simulate keyboard input
Good luck!
Would pressing Shift on the controller be an option too?
Did i followed the right procedure?
thx
I’ve just tried (on Windows) and I was able to combine the [alt] of my keyboard with a rotary.
Turning the rotary CW = Exposure +
Turning the rotary CW + [alt] = Exposure –
You seem to following the right procedure, maybe try another key, like [shift] to rule out the [ctrl] not working?
Good luck!
edit, Willem found a very helpful how-to video made by BOME, this one opens another door towards more control!
Hi,
This seems like a great project.
Is there any way we can import the keyboard shortcuts xml to capture one? Option seems not available
Thx!
Hi Willem,
You’re welcome :-)
If you’re using Windows you should be able to see the keyboard shortcuts after placing them in: C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\CaptureOne\CustomCommands
Good luck!
Hi and thanks for al this.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Terry
Hi Terry,
You’re welcome, I’m glad it got you started at least.
If you know a keyboard shortcut for the command you should be able to assign a pad to it.
Have a nice day!
